The white city at the foot of the volcano
Arequipa is known as the "White City"; named for its colonial center built in ashlar; clear volcanic rock. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Peru and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Sunny weather almost all year, with good hotels and excellent gastronomy and with an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level ideal for acclimating to visit other highest cities.
What to do in Arequipa?
We can visit and discover the most beautiful corners of the city: Yanahuara with its houses of ashlar and excellent vantage point to have a privileged view of 3 volcanoes, the Misti, Chachani and Sabancaya dominating throughout the city; to visit the monastery of Santa Catalina, the largest of Peru and one of the most beautiful colonial buildings of Arequipa, built the XVI century, houses a community of nuns for more than 4 centuries. All this can be done in a half-day guided tour.
You will have half a day free to enjoy the colonial center of Arequipa, visiting the Museum of Juanita Mummy, the monasteries of St. Teresa and Recoleta, the Church of San Agustin and the San Camilo market a few blocks from center. Enjoy the atmosphere of this popular neighborhood and discover the variety of products on offer.
